The Unthinkable Happened and the World Changed! Rosy Reyes G. Psychologist

Much has been lost in these months of pandemic; the most important: “human lives” and beyond this: companies closed, jobs were lost, families separated and many were reunited, strengthening their foundations, forgiving their pasts, uniting in the face of world reality.
This year has been a Master Class for humanity. Have we graduated? I don’t think so. We still have a lot to go through, to mature, to learn, to grow!
Given the “Stay at home” campaign, the self-sabotage mentality was activated: emotionally, physically and spiritually, from the fear popularized by the media and by government authorities. People feared for their life and with good reason; We were faced with a virus of which nothing was known, didn’t khow how it behaved, and how to treat it, we had to lose the greatest treasure of all existence: life.


Anxiety, a Social Novelty
For those who had never or perhaps had felt very little the psychological onslaught of pathological stress, depression, anguish or anxiety, this was the novelty during this pandemic. Quite unpleasant novelty, unmanageable, it was quite a torture, expressed by some shouting, by others not accepted and therefore silent. In these people, men and women, who perhaps before covid19, channeled their stress through routines in gyms, with frequent social encounters, with long-hours work activities, etc … the feeling of being deprived of freedom was traumatizing to them. Being confined within its habitat, our freedom was cut off and with it our mental health, the matter still lacking to be adequately addressed in our country.
For those who had already had encounters with stress, anxiety, depression, fear, etc … in many these disorders were potentiated, to the point of mentally fearing for their own lives and feeling even more alone in the face of such a global emergency situation, surrounded by constant confusing, contradictory television bombings, which generated more internal chaos.


Take Care of Each Other
And now, due to human, social, and economic pressure, there are no longer “stay home” campaigns, but rather: “wear masks”, “keep physical distance”, among others… with the purpose of safeguarding lives. And what will be the strategies that will help us meet these expectations? Those that allow us to learn, understand and accept that we are all one and that it is time to “take care of each other” because responsibility falls to all of us equally, from the greatest (in age, authority, positions, roles …) Even the smallest that depends on their family nucleus.
Weekly webinar, daily live’s on social networks, birthday zoomparty, online work, online school classes, … humans reinvented themselves and many without bursting accepted the challenge from within, to adapt to the “new reality”, where they had to leave the famous comfort zone, the same one they were perhaps used to for years and now suddenly they had to abandon.
This is our new reality, in which thank God there has been no such social distancing, but physical. Technology has helped us to endure, to continue, to remain connected with each other, and thus keep us, day after day, emotionally, socially, spiritually afloat.


Is Time to Feel
And to face this new reality here and now we can use wonderful tools, life philosophies like the mindfulness. It tells us that “here and now we must focus on wholeness by being present and staying in this present.” So then I invite you not to repress your emotions, feel them and allow them to express themselves. Feeling is living. Open yourself to feel everything: the flavors, the smells, the sensations. Here and now you have everything you need. We also recommend that you can practice yoga, meditation, tai chi or any other relaxation technique that allows you to release accumulated tension. Do not allow your mind to fly and go back to what could have been and was not, do not let your mind tell you that you should have done things differently. Everything was just as it had to be. And if there is something pending, do not worry, but if you take care, life brings it to the present. Also do not allow your mind to go to the future totally, because you would stop being in the present, you would stop living the here and now, which is where you belong. Do not allow your mind to make movies that later cause pain because it does not correspond to reality. Live the present, think about the now, enjoy what you do today, feel it, live it to the fullest. Well that’s all you have. Tomorrow does not exist, neither yesterday, there is only this moment in which you read this article, so be present, stay focused and do not let your mind fly until it gets lost and get the most out of this beautiful moment and breathe! If you allow it, the universe takes care of tomorrow, that scenario where everything is fine and everything passes.
I thought that 2020 would be the year that I would get everything I wanted. Now I know that 2020 is the year I learned to appreciate everything I have.
