El Caño Archeological Park is Renovated

A historical and cultural site that is on the rise at Cocle Province, is El Caño Archaeological Park. A museum founded in 1979, a land that has been excavated to discover the necropolis of our ancestors and was built around 700 and abandoned shortly after 1000 CE.
The museum is inside a restored colonial-style house. Nearby you can see two archaeological zones: where there are basaltic columns built for ceremonies and the sector with monolith formations, where mortuary mounds are identified along its eight hectares of land.
Research

Seven tombs have been excavated to date, in two of them remains of individuals of high social status have been found. In each grave there are multiple burials, where valuables, such as bracelets, jewelry and belts, were found near the bodies.
Following the latest excavations of the cemeteries and pre-Columbian ceremonial center in 2008, valuable information was obtained that became editorial material for important archaeological research journals worldwide. The documentary “El Dorado of Panama, the Golden Warriors (2016) was produced, which already has an international distribution.

Reopening
This Archaeological Park is guarded by the El Caño Foundation. They have been intervening in the necropolis area since 2008, a reservation for burials of high status ancestors. They have carried out conservation works of all material or structure found in archaeological sites.
In April 2019, the completely renovated museum was reopened, with repairs and structural improvements to its façade and interiors, a complete security system, air conditioning and LED lighting among others were installed. In that month a permanent and didactic exhibition was presented, where the artifacts found in 2008 (original artifacts and replicas) were exhibited, as the results of the investigations carried out by the members of the foundation.
