Just minutes from Santiago City, in the heart of Veraguas province, lies a spot where time seems to move at a different pace. Surrounded by lush vegetation and reflecting the sky in its calm waters, Lago Limon (Limon Lake) has become a destination that delights those seeking authentic experiences—far from mass tourism and in close contact with nature.

An Artificial Reservoir Born of Agricultural Development
What is now a tourist attraction boasting a valuable ecosystem had very different origins. Roughly four decades ago, the lake was created as an artificial reservoir to supply irrigation water for the region’s sugarcane crops. For years, it served this purpose, playing a key role in the agricultural development of Veraguas.
A New Vision: Environmental Conservation and Tourism
About twenty years ago, the Spiegel family acquired the properties surrounding the lake and subsequently obtained ownership of 80% of the 14-hectare area occupied by the lake itself, while the remaining 20% belongs to La Victoria Sugar Mill. From that moment, a different vision emerged: to protect this natural environment and transform it into a space where environmental conservation and tourism could develop responsibly.

One of the first decisions made was to halt water extraction for irrigation. This measure helped maintain the ecosystem’s balance and fostered the growth of the wide variety of species that inhabit the lake today.
A Flourishing Ecosystem
The waters of Lago Limon are home to various freshwater fish species—including tilapia, sargento, and colosoma, among others—that have found ideal conditions to thrive in this environment. This biological richness has made the lake an ideal destination for sport fishing, an activity conducted with respect for the natural resource.
However, life at the lake extends beyond what lies beneath the surface. Spectacled caimans, turtles, and an ever-growing diversity of birds complement a landscape that shifts constantly with the time of day and the season. For enthusiasts of photography, wildlife watching, and open spaces, Lago Limon offers scenery that invites visitors to pause and enjoy the
surroundings.

A Tourism Experience Rooted in Local Identity
One of the features that sets Lago Limon apart is its close relationship with the community. Although situated on private property, the lake remains accessible to local residents and visitors alike, allowing them to engage in sport fishing or fish for personal consumption.
This blend of conservation, recreation, and community involvement reflects a tourism development model where benefits extend beyond the visitors themselves, strengthening the bond between the destination and the people who have lived in the surrounding area for decades.
A Resort with Activities for the Whole Family
Complementing the natural setting, the Spiegel family opened a lakeside resort offering a wide range of facilities designed for relaxation and recreation. With a swimming pool, restaurant, comfortable cabins, an animal farm, a vegetable garden, a soccer field, and spacious green areas, the resort ensures that visitors of all ages can find activities to enjoy during their stay.
