Tourism requires places, culture, and traditions; however, to advance towards new heights, it needs people who inspire us to break the mold and achieve goals we only dreamed of before. For this reason, we have invited an entrepreneur, writer, and advocate for holistic wellness, founder of the Hope Foundation and co-founder of Valle Escondido Wellness Resort in Boquete. A special guest of honor, who has dedicated her life to inspiring personal transformation processes and creating spaces where health, nature, and inner growth intertwine. A survivor of domestic violence and author of the book “Escape for My Life,” Thalia Velasquez, has been a powerful voice of resilience and self-love, dedicates an exclusive interview with The Visitor- El Visitante to talk about Boquete, tourism, and how we can reach new heights in tourism.

What Boquete means to you on a personal, business, and touristic level?
“Boquete represents much more to me than a destination; it’s my refuge, my home, and the place where I rebuilt my life and my dreams. On a personal level, Boquete is that space of peace, vibrant nature, and renewing energy that allows me to heal and reconnect with myself after experiencing very difficult times. From a business perspective, Boquete has been the canvas where I’ve been able to express my passion for holistic wellness and hospitality, through Valle Escondido Wellness Resort. From a tourism perspective, I consider Boquete to be a treasure of Panama, a place that offers authenticity, human warmth, and a genuine connection with nature that captivates anyone who visits”.

What do you feel sets Boquete apart from other destinations in the country, and why is the wellness tourism you’ve focused on is appealing to foreigners?
“Boquete has a very special soul. It’s not just its eternally spring-like climate or its mountain landscapes, but the energy of its people, the tranquility of its life, and that balance between tradition and modernity that makes it unique. The wellness tourism we promote at Valle Escondido responds precisely to a growing need among people around the world: to disconnect from stress and reconnect with themselves. Foreigners find an authentic space here where nature, health, and personal growth are naturally integrated into every experience. Being able to offer health and wellness retreats within our portfolio is very rewarding because it allows me to accompany people on a profound journey of transformation, self-care, and connection with nature, guiding them to discover that true luxury lies in feeling good from the inside out”.

Boquete has grown significantly in residential tourism. What do you think it can be done to ensure that the district continues to grow without losing the natural and relaxing charm?
“I firmly believe that growth must go hand in hand with sustainability and respect for Boquete’s identity. Planned development is essential, protecting our green areas, water sources, and natural resources. Furthermore, it’s important to educate both residents and business owners about the importance of keeping the essence of Boquete: hospitality, quality of life, and harmonious coexistence with the environment. Boquete can’t become a crowded destination, but rather a place unique for its authenticity and respect for nature”.

You’ve been closely involved with the Boquete Chamber of Tourism. What is your vision for Boquete in tourism for 2030, and what projects would you like to see developed?
“My vision for Boquete by 2030 is that of a destination internationally recognized for its conscious and responsible tourism. I would love to see projects developed that further integrate sustainability, cultural tourism, and well-being, such as well-maintained eco-trails, local food trails, and spaces for learning as well as for human connection. I also believe that we must work together, both the public and private sectors, to strengthen the tourism infrastructure without losing Boquete’s boutique and personalized character”.
