Isla Grande, the Best Weekend Getaway for Every Visitor Looking for Fun and Relaxation

Many years ago, Isla Grande was unknown to the vast majority of people in Panama. Only some American soldiers had a house in this place and even a hotel. However, today it is one of the most popular places to visit in Colon Province. A tropical paradise for those looking for a weekend getaway away from urban stress.

Located in Portobelo National Park, Isla Grande is bathed by the Caribbean Sea and is surrounded by crystal clear waters. This Island full of colorful houses is perfect for families, couples or friends to spend unforgettable moments. Despite its popularity and the passage of time, this Island in Colon keeps its Afro-Antillean essence and its great natural attractions.

A Place to Enjoy Activities

Its waters are very calm, some areas look like pools where it is possible to swim calmly and cool off. It is also ideal for snorkeling and enjoying the marine diversity. In one of the points of Isla Grande it is possible to practice surfing, a rocky sector that attracts avid practitioners of this sport. Nights on Isla Grande can be quiet, as well as full of partying with music and drinks.

The Black Christ, an Iconic Image of the Island

Located in the sea, a short distance from the shore, it is a photographic icon for every Visitor. According to the oldest locals on the island, a soldier had a car accident and was left in a wheelchair. He asked the Black Christ for the miracle of walking again. After 8 years of therapy, the soldier walked again and he ordered the Black Christ to be made and placed in the sea near his house.

Visit the Lighthouse, one of the Oldest in the Region

Built in 1893, it is 131 years old and is one of the oldest in Latin America, with 55 meters above sea level. Designed by the Frenchman Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (architect of the Eiffel Tower in Paris) This lighthouse is located on the west side of the Island and has a cement path that leads to it.

It is possible to climb to the lighthouse itself by means of a spiral staircase. From the top it is possible to enjoy a beautiful view of the island and its surroundings. Although it is somewhat rusty, the structure remains in good condition.

Tours and Where to Stay

From Isla Grande it is also possible to enjoy different tours to Isla Mamey, Playa Grande, the Tunnel of Love and the entire Venas Azules sector.

On the Island there are hotels, cabins and hostels. You can share a room, camp, you can even rent a hammock and use the hostel facilities. There are also restaurants that offer Afro-Antillean delicacies based on fish and seafood that are favorites of many Visitors.
