Zapatilla Cays, a Marine Paradise in Bocas del Toro Surrounded by Nature, Coral Reefs and Beaches

Cayos Zapatilla are two uninhabited islands that are surrounded by a huge coral reef. Located east of Bastimentos Island, in the Bocas del Toro archipelago.  Cayo Zapatilla Norte has an area of ​​14 hectares, while Cayo Sur is larger with 34 hectares.

Origin of the Name Zapatilla

Zapatilla comes from the name of an indigenous fruit known as “zapatilla”. However, local legend says that the islands were formed when God stepped on the land and for that reason they are shaped like his sneakers.

In Cayos Zapailla you can enjoy fishing and diving in its spectacular coral reefs and crystal clear waters. These mangrove islands with beaches full of palm and coconut trees all around are a paradise full of biodiversity.  You can also observe the migration of hawksbill turtles, which are an endangered specie and come to this place to lay their eggs on the beaches of the western sector of both islands from March to September.

It is also possible to enjoy diving among several of the underwater formations where snappers, angel fish, groupers, parrot fish, butterfly fish and others have found refuge. It is also easy to enjoy dolphin watching since it is an area very frequented by these intelligent mammals.

There is no accommodation or restaurants in Cayos Zapatilla, so it is recommended to bring drinks and food. It is also important to note that several companies organize full-day tours to snorkel in its corals and even dolphin watching. In addition, these companies pick up tourists at their accommodation and take them back at the end of the tour activities.
