The Board of the National Marjoram Festival announced that the celebration of the seventieth edition of the National Traditional Festival will be held from September 22 to 27.

The Greatest Festival of Our Folklore

This festival considered the largest and most important in the country in terms of folklore, has the objective of exalting the essence of the Panamanian peasant, his beliefs, dances, songs and customs.

The National Festival of La Mejorana in Guarare has several events to highlight such as: the coronation, the written tenth contest, the musical instrument contest from which the best accordionists in the country have come, the cart parade and the bull games in the town square. All face-to-face again this year.

More than 80 folkloric delegations usually arrive at this festival and a large number of purely folkloric delegations from all over the country present themselves in the showcase of Panamanian folklore.

Seven Decades of History

The National Festival of La Mejorana is an event created in the middle of the last century by outstanding folklorists from the Azuero region such as Prof. Manuel F. Zarate, Dora P. de Zarate, Jose Nieves Angulo, Pancho Castillo, Casimiro Smith, Reyin Espino, Toño Saavedra, Benjamin Dominguez, Dr. Baltasar Isaza, Juan Ehrman, among others.

The first Festival was held in September 1949, together with the patronal festival of the Virgen de las Mercedes de Guarare, continuing to this day. In 1955, the Festival of La Mejorana was declared the greatest national festival of the panamanian tradition.
