Pearl Islands, a Marine and Natural World to Discover

The natural beauty of this group of islands, together with its richness in marine flora and fauna, attracts tourists from all over the world for a long time already. Its proximity to Panama City makes them the perfect escape for a weekend, or simply to spend a day of disconnection and relaxation. The crystal-clear waters and the white sand of its beaches give it, without a doubt, a heavenly touch to this place.
History of the Archipelago
The Pearl Islands were originally named by the Spanish explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa in honor of the abundant pearls that were harvested in the coasts of the islands. In this area, the famous Pilgrim Pearl that Felipe II owned and was also owned by actress Elizabeth Taylor was found, until her death in 2011.
In 1983, Contadora Island hosted the first meeting of the Contadora Group, which included several Latin American countries with the objective of promoting democracy in Central America. Recently, the Pearl Archipelago has been presented in three seasons of the popular television show Survivor.


How to Get There
To get to The Pearl Islands you can take a flight from Panama City and arrive in 30 minutes. You can also make the trip by boat or ferry that takes about 2 hours to any of the islands: Contadora, Taboga, Saboga, Nurseries, among others.

Contadora and San Jose Islands
Contadora Island is the only destination in the archipelago with enough infrastructure to attract a greater number of visitors. It has excellent beaches and lovely swimming spots. The town is still picturesque with a leisurely lifestyle, most people move on foot or in golf carts. The island measures only 1.2 square kilometers (0.5 square miles), so it is extremely easy to get anywhere.
San Jose Island is the second largest island in the archipelago. This private island with 44 square kilometers (17 square miles) has luxury resorts. Visitors who arrive have the whole island for themselves. Like the rest of the islands in the archipelago, San Jose Island is extremely beautiful, with wide beaches and forests.
Other islands that make up the archipelago are Saboga, Bayoneta, Pacheca, Mogo Mogo, Gibraleon, Casayeta, Casaya, La Mina, Galera, Viveros, Cañas and San Telmo.


Activities to Enjoy
Visitors can enjoy multiple outdoor activities that will make each day an adventure. Sport fishing is a very popular activity, thanks to its rich marine life and where world records have been achieved. Another popular activity is diving, where the Visitor can explore the great marine life surrounding the islands. Whale watching has been taking much more strength and creating awareness in the population and visitors around marine conservation. There are also tours to watch dolphins and sea turtles during the year. Other activities that tourists like to do are hiking in the woods and kayaks.
