Amador Causeway, a Wonder of Panama City

The “Causeway” at Amador is one of the best tourist attractions in all of Panama, for both local and foreign visitors. Few cities in the world have such a beautiful public recreational area on the sea. A privileged area consisting of three islands: Naos, Perico and Flamenco, connected to mainland by a road and waiting for each Visitor with the most varied entertainment.
This area has a wide variety of restaurants, the Frank Ghery Biomuseum, a new convention center soon to open playgrounds for children, wide sidewalks for sports, bikeways and much more.

Military History
Before becoming a tourist attraction, it uses to be a United States Navy Base to protect the Panama Canal Pacific entrance. The 3 islands that make up the Causeway were connected to mainland with materials extracted from the excavations at Culebra Cut during the canal construction. Likewise, anti-areal batteries were built for the protection of the Pacific side of the Canal, the world’s largest cannons that were installed during World War II along with a system of large bunkers beneath the islands. For many years this area was visited exclusively by American military from the Canal Zone and their relatives where they could enjoy attractions like: cinema, golf course, Officers Club and beach.

Research and Transportation Center
Also on Isla Naos and Culebra you can visit the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the Punta Culebra Marine Exhibition Center where Visitors can watch closely the habitat of sloths and marine fauna from all over our country.
From the “Causeway” the boats that take tourists to islands in the Pacific such as Taboga, Viveros, San José and Contadora leave. You have to find out with the transport company if the boat should take it from the pier in Pericos Island or in the “Balboa Yacht Club”. Calypso boats travel two times per day to Taboga and to other destinations when renting.

Gastronomy
Panamanian cuisine is delicious and even more so when it comes to seafood! In the Causeway the Visitor can try a variety of dishes and the best part is the view of Panama City’s skyline. There are many restaurants, but the ones that stand out the most for their gastronomy and voy environment are: Sirena, Pencas, Bucaneros, Mi Ranchito, Leños y Carbon, and if you like craft beer on tap it is almost mandatory to go to La Fabrica.

A Paradise for Taking Photos
The “Causeway” at Amador has privileged views that amazes every visitor. You can take beautiful panoramic photographs of the bay, the entrance of the Canal with its huge ships, the always majestic Bridge of the Americas, the luxurious yachts in the marinas and the impressive “skyline” of Panama City.
Whether your stay is a long or short, the Causeway is one of the must visit places in Panama City.
