Colonial Era, Gold Rush, and Panama Canal Construction

Founded in 1515 by the Spanish, Taboga was visited by famous pirates, including Morgan. However, after the disappearance of the Spanish Empire, the island regained its splendor until the 1850s, during the California Gold Rush, when it was visited by Ulysses S. Grant, who would later become the American Civil War hero and eighteenth President of the United States. Beginning in 1880, French engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps used the island as a rest and recreation center for workers on the Panama Canal, a project that also attracted one of its most illustrious guests, the painter Paul Gauguin.

From its bell tower, you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the Bay of Panama. Touring the island, visitors will realize why, since colonial times, Taboga was an important stopover for voyages that were on their way to discover the South Pacific and, during the construction of the Panama Canal, a major supply center.
