The Old Wreck, an Amazing Site to Dive in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago

Diving is one of the best activities to do in Bocas del Toro due to the wide variety of underwater life that is possible to explore.

This region of the country is located outside the Atlantic hurricane zone, which makes it easy to plan a trip to this archipelago and explore its marine wonders, as well as its Afro-Antillean culture.

A Diving Paradise

The Bocas del Toro Archipelago is also home to some of the most incredible diving spots, including deep-water ledges, cave systems, shipwrecks, and some of the most diverse and abundant coral reefs in the region.

However, the best months to dive in Bocas del Toro are during the two dry seasons each year: the first includes February, March, April and May, followed by September, October and November.

The Old Wreck, a Popular Diving Spot

On the southwest side of Isla Colon there is an old sunken ferry that makes for a very accessible and interesting diving activity. Called the Old Wreck, this old ship was sunk in this sector with the purpose of creating an artificial reef and habitat for fish. This location offers generally clear and calm waters and is now very popular with divers and people who like snorkeling.

Discover Marine Life Inside the Sunken Ferry

The boat is at 20 to 40 feet underwater and hosts a lot of fish. When diving at this incredible site it is possible to look inside the ferry and see the old Captains Quarters, where it is normal to find huge species of snappers and groupers hanging out. And if you want to take a very original underwater selfie, there is also an old toilet attached to the top of the boat, a photo that will surely be one of the most unforgettable memories of this underwater experience.

Over time, this boat became part of the natural environment and today is a refuge for countless fish as well as other inhabitants of the reefs that surround Isla Colon.

Bocas del Toro, a Coral Reef Jungle

Bocas del Toro has some of the most diverse coral reef systems in the world, with 95% of the hard and soft corals found here. What makes Bocas del Toro one of the top destinations for diving is the number of cave systems and large underwater rock formations to be explore.
