Tour Costa Arriba de Colon, an Experience full of Caribbean Beaches, Culture and Nature

It can be said that Colon Province is divided into three regions: Colon City with its free zone, surrounding areas and the Panama Canal locks, to the west Costa Abajo crossing the third bridge over the canal and Costa Arriba entering through the town of Sabanitas just 10 kilometers from Colon City.

Costa Arriba is a route full of history, beautiful natural landscapes, a highly influential Afro-Caribbean culture and charming people. A tour that goes along the Caribbean coast and where there are a large number of communities of fishermen, farmers and people who make a living out of tourism. Maria Chiquita

It is the first beach in this region, it is generally very calm and a popular surf spot. Here is a small restaurant, where Afro-Caribbean and Panamanian meals are prepared. There is also the Bala Beach condominium tourism project.

Playa La Angosta

It is a beautiful beach, the typical image of the Caribbean Eden. Weekdays is where it is most quiet, since from Friday to Sunday it receives a large number of Visitors. It is an ideal beach for snorkeling due to the beautiful marine life in the area.

Portobelo

Following the road along the beautiful blue shores of the Caribbean, is the historic town of Portobelo. Here the exuberant vegetation mixes with the legacy of this city when it used to be the largest Spanish colonial port in Central America, which is why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is surrounded by military forts that protected the goods that were sent to Europe, since it was frequently attacked by famous pirates in history such as Henry Morgan and Francis Drake. It can be said that it is the epicenter of the Congo culture of Panama with an Afro-Caribbean gastronomy and religious beliefs that have transcended borders such as the Portobelo Black Christ.

Venas Azules

From any of the Portobelo docks you can visit this area of ​​impressive natural beauty. It is an estuary located within the Portobelo National Park that can only be reached by boat. One of its most important attractions is the tunnel of love, a natural canal made of mangroves, an experience that can be enjoy in kayak. Another place that  you can visit is Playa Blanca, a paradise full of palm trees and crystal clear waters. However, the crown of this area is Isla del Padre, a natural pool of transparent water near mangroves where it is possible to take a dip and have a memorable experience.

Isla Mamey

In Portobelo the highway comes to a Y, to the right it leads Colon inland and to more distant places such as Nombre de Dios, but to the left it leads to Isla Mamey and Isla Grande. The first is a private island that is located minutes from the mainland by boat and where people can enjoy a beach with turquoise waters and snorkel thanks to the coral reefs that surround the island. In this is island there are public toilets and showers for all Visitors.

Isla Grande

Continuing the road after Isla Mamey you find the town of La Guaira, from where you take a boat to Isla Grande. This island is home to nearly a thousand inhabitants of Afro-Caribbean descent, a place where there are no cars, only beaches lined with palm trees and a town that lives to the rhythm of Caribbean music and where it is possible to find hotels, restaurants and activities. Here it is ideal to go snorkelling, diving, hiking to the famous lighthouse built by the same architect of the Eiffel Tower and try the delicious Afro-Caribbean cuisine.
