Pilgrimage of the Black Christ of Portobelo, a Route to the Traditions and History of Panama

The procession of the Black Christ in Portobelo, attended by thousands of people including Panamanians and visitors from other countries, takes place every October 21 in the streets of this city located off the Caribbean coast of the province of Colon. From October 15, hundreds of devotees begin their pilgrimage from all parts of the country to worship the Nazarene for the miracles received in their petitions. Wearing purple tunics, some with small images of Christ walk that long path to the San Felipe Churh. Being closer to the Church, many decide to finish their pilgrimage walking on their knees despite the pain, although many say that it is not enough to thank the Nazarene. A way of offering a sacrifice to Christ for the miracles received.

Origins of the Black Christ

The true origins of this highly revered image are actually unknown. According to a legend, the statue itself may have been a miracle. In the year 1658, the month of October and according to the story, a black slave was fishing in the city when he saw a large object floating in the water. After dragging the mysteriously wrapped object onto dry land, he unwrapped it in full view of several onlookers, revealing the figure of the Black Christ. Many locals felt that the appearance of the statue was a sign that Jesus was with them, which started a great veneration in the town. This veneration was rewarded and verified by the population when a plague that was devastating the area disappeared just when the figure of Christ arrived in Portobelo.

The statue was placed in the San Felipe Church, where it has remained ever since. To honor the miraculous actions of the Black Christ, a procession has been held every October 21 for several years now.
