Covid-19 Protocols to Travel, the New Normal in Tourism

With all that we have been living with the pandemic for more than 9 months, traveling abroad has become more complicated. Not only because of the concern of going to a country and getting infected, but also because the protocols when entering a country (including Panama) already require prior preparation, not being well informed can make the trip a challenge.
Mr. Marcos Sucre from Syslab, says that it is important that the Traveler knows in detail the different types of Covid-19 tests, that are requested from the destination being traveled, know what happens in case of testing positive, etc. Having all the detailed information helps to prepare well so that the trip is more enjoyable.

Types of Tests
To know if a person is Covid-19 positive or negative there are two tests. The most common and fastest is the antigen test that detects certain proteins in the virus, which is done by taking a fluid sample extracted from the nose with a swab, having the results in minutes. The second diagnostic test is by PCR, which is done by drawing the blood, to detect a fragment of ta genetic material of a pathogen or microorganism. It has certain complexities that make it a “test” that takes more time to produce results. Marcos Sucre tells us that both tests are performed at Syslab, however it is suggested to find out which is the most convenient type of diagnosis for the traveler depending on the protocols.

New Requirements to Enter the United States
Panamanians love to travel, no matter the continent, however, historically the United States is the most visited destination by Panamanians and foreigners from our country, even during the pandemic. It is very important for Visitors to know the new entry protocols to the northern country, since for a few days they have been more strict. First of all, even if the Visitor is Panamanian and wishes to enter the United States from Schengen, the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa, it will not be possible since these countries are temporarily restricted until their contagion and risk rates drop. The new requirements apply even if the US is just a stopover.

The first requirement is to have the result of a Covid-19 test carried out at most 72 hours before traveling, the detection test must be either antigens or PCR. Otherwise, the traveler has to carry a medical proof that indicates that he has recovered from the disease. Both forms can be presented in print or digitally. Of course, the information must be delivered to the airline right before traveling in order for them to confirm the results before boarding the plane. These requirements apply to all passengers from 2 years of age and older.

Marcos Sucre from Syslab recommends find out all the details in advance before traveling and if the traveler needs to take the test, he recommends doing it 48 hours before to be sure that the results are valid during the trip and take their printed exam.
Requirements to Enter Panama
If you are a Panamanian traveler or resident foreigner returning to Panama from abroad or a tourist coming for a visit or business, it is important to know the requirements to come into the country.

The first requirement is to present a Covid-19 negative diagnosis either PCR or antigen test (both with swab only) carried out up to 48 hours before the flight arrival. In case of not presenting it or the certificate has more than 48 hours from its issuance, the Visitor must take a quick test on arrival (at the airport) at a cost of $50.00 for the traveler.
If the test result is positive, the traveler must carry out a mandatory 14-day quarantine at home (in case of being a resident), or in a hospital hotel designated by the Ministry of Health of Panama.
When traveling, you must always take into account: climate, culture, currency, accommodation, transportation and now… protocols for entering the country as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The New Normal when it comes to international tourism.
