The historical monumental complex of Old Panama is an archaeological site that amazes tourists and residents of Panama City. With its imposing ruins and the sea in the background, this place is a mandatory stop for those who want to learn more about the origins of the Panamanian capital. Visiting this historical monument that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is discovering its history.pFounded in 1519 and Destroyed in 1671
Panama La Vieja was the first European settlement on the Pacific coast in Latin America, founded on August 15, 1519, a strategic place for conquest missions and trade in the region. However, the city was attacked and sacked by the English pirate Henry Morgan in 1671 and sent to burn by Mainland Captain General Don Juan Perez de Guzman. This event caused the city to move to its current settlement in Casco Antiguo. Touring Panama La Vieja is reliving the importance of its history.

Fort Nativity
Located just before entering the Visitor Center, this site had the objective of protecting the old city with a capacity for a dozen soldiers and four cannons. At that time, it was not estimated that the city would be attacked, however, stories indicate that Henry Morgan began his attack from this point.

San Juan de Dios Hospital
The tour continues at the San Juan de Dios Hospital, created two years after the founding of the city. From its beginnings, this place had a very limited budget and chaotic operation. This situation caused wealthy families to be attended in their own homes by private doctors, since in that place more lives were lost than saved.
Main Square
Located in front of the Cathedral, it was the center of political, cultural, religious, commercial and entertainment activity of the old city. Complementing the square is the Samuel Lewis Garcia de Paredes Plaza Mayor Museum. A perfect place to delve into the history of the city, as well as learn everything about the pre-Hispanic, colonial and modern stages of this monument.

The Cathedral Tower
The leading role in this historical heritage goes to this site, since from the top of the bell tower it is possible to enjoy panoramic views of the ruins and the modern city. An incredible and unique contrast that this city offers.
Although the cathedral is built of stones, it was originally made of wood but was rebuilt and restored several times since the wood was very fragile and it deteriorated quickly.

The King’s Bridge
Located on the other side of Via Cincuentenario, outside the limits of the historical park, it is possible to visit it at any time. This monument was part of the access route to the city and connected with Camino de Cruces. All the treasures transported from Peru passed through this bridge, which were then transported to Portobelo and sent by sea to Spain.
