Located in the Panamanian Pacific, Contadora is the most famous of the more than 200 islands that make up the Pearl Islands archipelago. Its natural beauty, combined with a fascinating history and an exclusive atmosphere, has made it one of Panama’s most iconic island destinations.

An Abundance of Pearls and a Fascinating History
The archipelago was named by Vasco Nuñez de Balboa due to the extraordinary abundance of pearls in the region. According to history, the pearls harvested on this island were counted, giving rise to the name Isla Contadora (Counter Island). During the 16th century, pearl farming profoundly shaped the area. The legendary pearl “La Peregrina” , considered the most famous in the world, originated here. It passed through the kingdoms of Spain, England, and France, eventually reaching the hands of Elizabeth Taylor centuries later.
From Historic Island to Exclusive Destination
After the colonial era, Contadora Island re-emerged as a tourist destination in the 1970s and 80s with the construction of the Contadora Hotel. It soon became a summer retreat for celebrities and historical figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, the Kennedys, John Wayne, Julio Iglesias, the King Felipe Gonzalez, and the Shah of Iran, who was exiled to Panama in 1979.

Beaches to Discover at Your Pace
The island boasts 11 white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and deep blue. Among the most outstanding are Playa Cacique, considered one of the most beautiful; Playa Galeon, next to the airport; and Playa Larga, located on the site of the former resort. Playa de las Suecas is Panama’s only official nudist beach. For greater privacy, nearby islands such as Mogo Mogo, Pacheca, and Chapera can be visited by boat.
World-Class Sport Fishing and Marine Life
The Pearl Islands archipelago is one of the best sport fishing destinations in Panama, thanks to its nutrient-rich waters. From April to November, it’s possible to catch species such as tuna, mahi-mahi, sailfish, needlefish, and wahoo, as well as croaker and snook.

Whales and Diving: Most Popular Activities
Between June and October, thousands of humpback whales migrate to these waters to breed, offering spectacular sightings from authorized boats. The island also boasts a PADI-certified dive center, ideal for diving.
At Two Hours from the Panama City with All the Comforts
You can reach Contadora by ferry from Flamenco Island in Panama City in approximately two hours. Restaurants, shops, and services are concentrated near the dock and airstrip. Contadora Island offers boutique hotels and exclusive accommodations.
