{"id":9014,"date":"2025-11-05T18:20:55","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T17:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevisitorpanama.info\/eng\/?p=9014"},"modified":"2025-11-05T18:31:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T17:31:31","slug":"today-colon-celebrates-the-actions-that-officially-marked-panamas-separation-of-colombia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevisitorpanama.info\/eng\/2025\/11\/05\/today-colon-celebrates-the-actions-that-officially-marked-panamas-separation-of-colombia\/","title":{"rendered":"Today the Whole Country Celebrates the Actions in Colon that Officially Marked Panama&#8217;s Separation of Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, November 5th, all of Panama thanks and commemorates the actions carried out by the men and women of the province of Col\u00f3n who officially finalized the severance of ties between Panama and Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a day to exalt people like Porfirio Mel\u00e9ndez, Carlos Clemant, among others, and women like Aminta Mel\u00e9ndez; who played a fundamental role in the separatist movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been 118 years since that historical event, which solidified us as a free and sovereign country, with actions that were vital for the severance of ties with Greater Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevisitorpanama.info\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/colon-5-noviembre-1903-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9019\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to national historiography, while Panama City celebrated the separation, in Col\u00f3n there was a small army of approximately 500 Colombian soldiers who formed the &#8220;Batall\u00f3n de Tiradores&#8221; (Sharpshooters Battalion), commanded by Colonel Eliseo Torres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had arrived in the bay of Col\u00f3n due to a rumor circulating in Colombia about a supposed Nicaraguan invasion through the Atlantic Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don Porfirio Mel\u00e9ndez, a merchant from Col\u00f3n at the time, intervened with the Colombian soldiers, telling them that the rumors of a Nicaraguan invasion were false and that there was complete peace in Panama City, encouraging them to return to Barranquilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 5, 1903, Juan Antonio Henr\u00edquez, a member of the Revolutionary Board of Col\u00f3n, sent a telegram to Panama stating the following: \u201cOnly now, at 7:30 p.m., can it be said that the separation of Panama is assured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This crucial event sealed the historic separatist movement of Panama from Colombia, which had been declared on November 3rd of that same year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, November 5th, all of Panama thanks and commemorates the actions carried out by the men and women of the province of Col\u00f3n who officially finalized the severance of ties between Panama and Colombia.
