{"id":4640,"date":"2022-08-05T19:19:46","date_gmt":"2022-08-05T17:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevisitorpanama.info\/eng\/?p=4640"},"modified":"2022-08-05T19:21:43","modified_gmt":"2022-08-05T17:21:43","slug":"world-indigenousday-the-opportunity-to-see-our-present-and-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevisitorpanama.info\/eng\/2022\/08\/05\/world-indigenousday-the-opportunity-to-see-our-present-and-future\/","title":{"rendered":"World IndigenousDay, the Opportunity to See Our Present and Future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Next Tuesday, August 9, under the slogan: &#8220;The role of indigenous women in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge&#8221;, the World Indigenous Day will be celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This celebration, which began in 1993, is for the\nUnited Nations General Assembly the date that marks the day of the first\nmeeting, in 1982, of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations\nof the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1566\" height=\"1045\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevisitorpanama.info\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Compress_20220804_135415_5979.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4643\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seven Panamanian Indigenous Groups <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our country there are seven\nindigenous peoples, these are the Ng\u00e4be, the Buglee, the Guna, the Embera, the Wounaan, the Bri\nbri, and the Naso Tj\u00ebrdi. According to the 2010 census, they accounted 417,559\ninhabitants, 12% of the total population of Panama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Panama, the diversity of the original peoples\naround the world is commemorated, where their identities and cultural\nexpressions are recognized, but their struggles, resistance and resilience to\nsurvive the global context are also made visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2258\" height=\"2070\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thevisitorpanama.info\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Compress_20220804_135415_5454.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4644\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Culture that\nEndures Over Time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this day, leaders,\nrepresentatives and local indigenous populations seek for their languages \u200b\u200band\nsociocultural expressions endure over time despite the pressures of\ninternational markets, the commodification of their culture and the over exploitation of\nnatural resources in their ancestral territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Invitation to\nSee Our Present and Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Day for Indigenous Peoples is a way of personifying the importance of our own history, but above all it is a call to turn to see our present and future.
