Ethiopia: The Origin of Geisha Plant Material<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant material that gave rise to Panamanian Geisha was collected in Ethiopia during the 1930s. It subsequently passed through a research station in Tanzania before arriving in 1953 at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) in Costa Rica, where it was registered as accession T2722. During the 1960s, CATIE distributed this material to Panama, where it was initially valued for its tolerance to coffee leaf rust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, however, the Geisha variety remained virtually unknown. Its agronomic characteristics did not lend themselves to mass expansion, and the variety did not initially spark the commercial interest it would garner decades later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The major turning point occurred in the highlands of Chiriqui. On the Peterson family estates\u2014particularly at Hacienda La Esmeralda\u2014Geisha was cultivated under high-altitude and microclimate conditions that revealed an extraordinary sensory profile. The resulting cups stood out for their floral aromas and notes reminiscent of jasmine, white flowers, stone fruits, and citrus. World Coffee Research confirms that Panamanian Geisha can achieve exceptional quality when grown at high altitudes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 2004 and 2005, Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda burst onto the international specialty coffee scene, achieving extraordinary scores and prices at the Best of Panama competition. From that point on, other Panamanian producers began developing their own lots, ushering in a new generation of coffees distinguished by estate, plot, altitude, and processing method. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Phenomenon That Keeps Breaking Records<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The phenomenon has continued to grow. In 2025, a washed Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda, rated at 98 points, reached US$30.20 per kilogram at the Best of Panama auction. A 20-kilogram lot sold for US$604.08, purchased by Julith Coffee from Dubai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
